Winter Pool Cover Tips

October 7th, 2011

There’s more to pool covers than meets the eye. Here’s a primer on what to consider.

Above ground vs. inground pool covers
While the design differs in the way that they fasten and secure to your pool deck, the end result is the same. Your pool cover will be secure enough to withstand winds and winter storms, and won’t sink under the weight of any water or leaves that can accumulate over the season.

Above Ground Winter Pool Covers
above ground winter pool covers are attached via a cable that passes through loops along the edge of the cover. The cable is attached to a winch that you’ll tighten just like the elastic around the edge of a shower cap. If your pool is located in an area subject to strong winds, adding shrink wrap plastic will seal the top and can be a good way to add extra security.

Inground Winter Pool Covers With Water Bags and Fitted Winter Pool Covers

Inground winter pool covers also follow the contour of the pool and deck, and feature loops which are filled with water bags shaped to fit the exact contour of your pool. If your vinyl liner pool was constructed in the past 20 years it probably has a track designed to hold a fitted winter cover without water bags.

Both the inground or above ground winter pool covers will be secured to lie just on top of the pool water.  In preparing your pool for the winter, you’ll lower the level of the water below the skimmers and returns. Be sure your pool chemistry is balanced and your pool water is clean.

In all cases, the quality of the winter cover is important .The tighter the weave and thicker the coating on the cover the more it will seal the pool water from contamination over the winter.

*Please note that these types of pool covers and the way they are secured will not support any weight on top.

Safety Pool Covers
In addition to the basic inground and above ground winter pool covers described above, there are safety pool covers. Like standard winter pool covers, you’ll secure them to your deck in the fall and leave them on until you open your pool in the spring or summer. Also like the above mentioned pool covers, safety pool covers are available in either mesh or solid designs. Generally the mesh type is more durable in your pool area.

In contrast to the standard winter pool covers mentioned above, safety pool covers add more security to the basic function of keeping your pool clean over the winter. For inground pools, a safety cover is secured to the deck with brass anchors.  Safety covers are kept taut at deck level with strips of reinforced webbing that attach by springs to the anchors or brackets. This will give you a complete seal that cannot be penetrated and will keep any unexpected visitors like children, pets and other small animals from falling into the pool.

Safety covers come in a variety of colours that will complement your outdoor decor and they must conform to the Standard Performance Specification as set out by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) so you can be sure of their security. These Standards make sure that your safety cover will be able to support a specified weight and remain sealed to prevent gaps where a small child or animal can sneak through. The design will also remove any standing water.

Manufactured according to ASTM specifications, safety covers can be purchased in all mesh or as a solid cover with mesh drainage panels. They are also available as all solid covers that you will use in conjunction with a pool cover pump.

Advantages of Safety Pool Covers:
-    Safety pool covers are the best option if you have pets or small children, or live in an area frequented by wild animals. Remember the neighbour’s pets and children too – no backyard is completely secure and that’s of even more concern if you take winter vacations.
-     While they cost more than the other types of winter pool covers, they’re more durable and will last longer while giving you peace of mind as they prevent accidents and even loss of life.
-     The designs are more attractive and aesthetically pleasing than standard winter pool covers, and they won’t collect debris on top that you’ll have to clean off come springtime.

Poolside fun may be over for the season when the cold weather comes, but taking the time and forethought to properly prepare your pool for the winter can save you time and money when you reopen in the spring – not to mention saving your pool from potentially ruinous damage and preventing tragic accidents.

Safety Pool Covers

October 7th, 2011

If the kids are back at school, then it’s also time to think about getting your pool ready for the winter. Proper pool closing procedures are an important part of your yearly pool maintenance program in Canada or any northern climate region.

Getting your pool ready for winter involves several steps, including reducing the water levels, adjusting the chemical balance, removing water from any intake or outtake lines and from all other pool equipment (pumps, filter and heater).  Along with these measures, a good safety pool cover is an essential part of the process.

Safety pool covers serve a number of important functions.

-    They’ll protect your valuable property investment from harsh winter weather conditions and ultra violet rays of the sun.
-    They keep leaves, dirt and other debris out of your pool, preventing contamination.
-    They protect children, pets and unintended visitors from accidental falls during a time when the cold as well as the water is a safety factor. Certainly, there’s no substitute for proper supervision, but a good pool cover is an important safety device.
-    They save hours of pumping and cleaning of conventional pool covers in the spring.
At Bremner Pools, we’ve thought of another reason too – looks. Our safety pool covers come in a variety of attractive colours and look much better than muddy, leafy water.

Properly winterizing your pool means a lot less work and hassle when you want to reopen again in the spring/summer. The last thing you want when the warm weather returns is to have to perform extensive maintenance, and a good safety pool cover can go a long way to minimizing the fuss so you can enjoy your pool sooner rather than later.

The consequences of not opening your swimming pool soon enough

July 26th, 2011

Surprisingly, some people have waited until now to finally open their swimming pools. This can drastically cut short your summer swimming season, but it can also have other undesirable effects on your pool and summer fun.

Green Algae

When a swimming pool is left to sit under its winter cover under a baking sun, green algae growth occurs. And once the pool is opened – instead of being able to swim nearly right away – you’re faced with the uphill battle of algae removal.

Mosquitos

A stagnant swimming pool is a giant vat of standing water and ideal breeding ground, as far as mosquitos are concerned. The sooner you open your pool, the sooner you can prevent mosquitos from setting up home – making outdoor entertaining even more enjoyable.

Pollen

Pollen is difficult to control and the prevalence of pollen in your area depends on where you live. But if a pool is not circulating, the pollen levels can build up in the water and make it that much harder to keep clear later.

We’ve recently experienced record-breaking heat throughout Toronto and the GTA with more predicted on the way. If you haven’t opened your pool yet, do so as soon as possible. Next year, consider opening your pool as soon as the ground is no longer frozen – and you’ll be prepared for those unexpected, humid mid-spring days.   If you’re concerned about the extra swimming pool maintenance that may need to be done when you open early, you can hire a professional pool services company to take care of it for you – it’s not as expensive as you’d think.

Summer Swimming Pool Safety Tips From The Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada

July 26th, 2011

If you’ve got a swimming pool, you’re likely spending Toronto’s record-breaking heat wave lounging in and around your pool. As noted in some of our previous blogs, it’s important to be aware of potential issues with pool ownership.  As the saying goes, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ With this in mind, we’d like to present the following general pool safety tips courtesy of The Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada:

  • Always swim with a partner, never alone.
  • Know your swimming limits and stay within them. Do not try to keep up with a stronger, skilled swimmer or encourage others to keep up with you. Keep an eye on weaker swimmers-if they appear tired, encourage them to get out of the water and rest.
  • Watch out for the “dangerous too’s”-too tired, too cold, too much sun, too much strenuous activity. Get out of the water immediately if any of these situations occur.
  • Stay away from the main drain, as suction from the pump could entrap you underwater.
  • Use common sense regarding food and beverages while swimming. Do not chew gum or eat while you swim; you could easily choke. Never drink alcohol and swim.
  • Use plastic instead of glassware in the pool area.
  • Obey “No Diving” signs. A general rule is to enter feet first into water rather than headfirst.
  • Never dive into an aboveground pool. They are too shallow.
  • Never walk on the pool cover.
  • When the pool is in use, make sure the pool cover is removed completely from the surface.
  • Be aware of changing weather conditions and stay alert for approaching electrical storms. Water conducts electricity so leave the pool immediately when you recognize the signs of an impending storm.
  • Maintain rescue equipment (e.g., pole, rope, shepherd’s crook, personal floatation devices, etc.) and a first aid kit by the pool.
  • Keep a cordless phone poolside. Program the phone with emergency phone numbers and/or post a list of emergency phone numbers in your pool area.
  • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid.
  • Establish a set of pool rules and enforce them.
  • Post a sign of Safety Rules in the pool area.
  • In case of an emergency call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number.

Drowning is a silent danger – people who are drowning rarely look like they do in movies, where they are depicted as flailing about and making lots of noise. Children who are drowning will often draw little attention to themselves and are unable to call out or shout. This is why children should be very closely supervised when swimming and never left alone – not even for a moment to grab a drink or the phone.

Small children should never be left in a swimming pool out of arm’s each. If your child, their friends or even adults are not strong swimmers, they should be wearing lifejackets or have access to a safe floatation device – even better, consider enrolling weaker swimmers in swimming lessons to improve their confidence in the water.

The Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada is a non-profit national association whose members are companies, individuals and organizations involved in the pool and hot tub industries that promotes the safe enjoyment of swimming pools and hot tubs. Swimming Pool Safety and You – Part 2

June 13th, 2011

In the majority of residential swimming pools and swimming areas, adults are usually placed in charge of supervising swimmers. And, while most swimming pool safety literature is geared towards the supervision of younger swimmers, it’s important to also consider the safety of adults.

Swimming Lessons for Adults?

In Canada, over 400 lives are lost annually through water-related incidents, with even more landing up in hospital after almost drowning. The good news is that swimming-related injury is completely preventable.

According to a recent article in the Guelph Mercury, in Ontario the majority of drowning victims are between the ages of 18 and 49. When factors such as alcohol and not wearing a life-jacket in a boat are eliminated, not knowing how to swim is the reason many adults find themselves in trouble in the water. Newcomers to Canada are also more likely to not know how to swim.

Most swimming pool bylaws in Ontario, such as having a swimming pool completely enclosed by a locking fence, are meant to protect small children as opposed to adults.

But more and more adults are taking swimming lessons specially-designed for them. The City of Toronto has a number of swimming programs for adults  that run throughout the summer.

Recognizing the signs of someone in distress

The signs of someone in distress while swimming are not always as obvious as one might think. Television and movies lead us to assume that someone who is in trouble while in a swimming pool or other body of water will be flailing, splashing and making lots of noise, drawing plenty of attention. In reality, this is just not the case.

When someone is in distress while swimming, they may be unable to speak because they are trying to catch their breath. In fact, they may not be able to call out at all.

When drowning, flailing of the arms in the air or splashing is rare because the person will instinctively have their arms down, trying to push themselves out of the water.

Someone who is in trouble in a swimming pool may be completely upright in the water, gasping, have their eyes closed or their head low in the water with their mouth at water level. They may seem like they are trying to swim but are not going anywhere.

Recognizing the signs of someone in distress can mean that you are able to assist them or get help that much sooner, which can save lives.

Have a safe and fun summer!

Swimming Pool Safety and You – Part 1

June 13th, 2011

Swimming Pool Safety and You – Part 1

Summer sure feels like it’s here already with near record-breaking temperatures and rising humidity across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). If you haven’t opened your swimming pool yet, you likely will soon. Swimming pool safety is an important part of owning a pool and following safety protocols will allow you to get the most out of your swimming pool each and every summer, worry-free.

- Always have a fence with a locking gate around your swimming pool. It’s the law. Read more on Toronto’s swimming pool fence bylaw.

- If you’re in charge of supervising young swimmers, take a CPR course to familiarize yourself with swimming pool safety protocols and to increase your own confidence when supervising children.

- Only ever allow swimmers to dive from the tip of the diving board, never from the sides of the diving board or sides of the pool. Sometimes, it can be difficult to judge the depth or the distance from the other side of the pool when diving.

- Keep the telephone near the swimming pool to avoid the temptation of running inside – even just for a second – to answer a ringing telephone.

- Swimming lessons are a great way to give kids more skills and confidence in the water. But no matter how advanced a swimmer your child is, no one of any age should be in a swimming pool alone or unsupervised.

Following proper swimming pool chemical storage and safety protocol is just another way to stay safe around your pool this summer. Please see our tips for the safe storage of swimming pool chemicals.

The Safe Storage of Swimming Pool Chemicals

May 23rd, 2011

The Safe Storage of Swimming Pool Chemicals

It’s easy to forget that you’re in charge of storing some very dangerous and potentially explosive chemicals when you have your own swimming pool.

“Swimming pool chemicals” is a broad phrase that includes a number of different water conditioners, oxidizers and water chemistry adjusters needed to keep your swimming pool healthy and can include algicides, calcium hypochlorite, sodium bicarbonate and muriatic acid.

Tips for the safe storage of swimming pool chemicals

One of the biggest concerns with storing swimming pool chemicals is accidentally getting them wet. Swimming pool chemicals should be stored in a location where they are always kept dry. A leaky or damp storage area should be fixed immediately because if swimming pool chemicals get wet (other than being added straight into a swimming pool), this can create dangerous chemical reactions. Other sources of unexpected water near your pool chemicals can include rain through an open window, a sprinkler system incase of fire and even leaky liquid swimming pool chemicals coming in contact with dry chemicals.

Keep your pool chemicals elevated off of the ground to limit their possible contact with water.

The danger of corrosion and swimming pool chemicals

Chlorine is a corrosive chemical and can eat through metals like steel and copper. Chlorine chemicals kept on steel shelving or near copper pipes can create a catastrophe if they do eventually leak.

Other tips for preventing swimming pool chemical accidents

While convenient, avoid storing your lawn mower, any other gas-powered machinery (including swimming pool heaters) or gas and flammable materials (including fertilizers, grease, paints and herbicides) with your pool chemicals. Try not to let your swimming pool chemical storage area become a storage area for pool toys, boxes or other clutter that can present a fire hazard.

Only store liquid chemicals below powder chemicals to prevent accidental drips or leaks, and never store swimming pool chemicals above your head.

Never store swimming pool chemicals in unmarked containers or reuse old containers.

The Safe Handling of Swimming Pool Chemicals

May 23rd, 2011

Handling swimming pool chemicals can become a mundane, everyday task for swimming pool owners. When using swimming pool chemicals properly they can be a safe and important way to keep your pool safe for swimming, but people can sometimes become complacent when handling these dangerous chemicals.

Tips for the safe handling of swimming pool chemicals

The cardinal rule of swimming pool chemicals is to always add the chemicals to water, and never add water to the chemicals. Swimming pool chemicals are designed to be added to very large quantities of water all at once, but dangerous reactions and even the release of hazardous fumes can result if these swimming pool chemicals get wet by themselves – this can occur through improper mixing, splashes or leaks wherever the chemicals are being stored.

  • Always close containers fully and firmly.
  • Never mix new chemicals with old ones, even if they are the same chemical from the same company.
  • Only use one chemical at a time, and avoid using the same scoop or measuring cup with one chemical and then another chemical to avoid unintentionally mixing the chemicals.
  • Make sure your hands are dry when handling swimming pool chemicals.
  • When handling swimming pool chemicals, wear protective gear like goggles, gloves and face masks. Unintentionally moistening pool chemicals (with your tears, saliva or even sweat) can be dangerous. Safe handling of swimming pool chemicals means preventing accidental inhalation and eye contact.
  • If swimming pool chemicals are spilled, do not attempt to put the spilled chemical back into the container.
  • Do not use a dry chemical fire extinguisher if there is a fire near your swimming pool chemicals. If the fire cannot be extinguished with plenty of water only, call the fire department and leave the area.

Hiring A Good Pool Service Company

April 26th, 2011

Hiring a professional pool services company is a great choice for homeowners who want to be able to relax and enjoy their pool without putting in all the time and effort required for proper pool maintenance. After all, more homeowners would rather spend their summer days adrift on an inflatable pool chair than vacuuming the pool bottom or scrubbing algae off the pool walls.

But how do you look for and choose a reputable and reliable pool service company?

Homeowners should always make sure that a pool service company is insured. Swimming pool companies should carry liability, disability and worker’s compensation insurance in order to protect their customers, themselves and their employees.

A reputable company will have all of the above, and will have written service agreements, or contracts, with their customers. Some are flexible and can include periodic pool maintenance or the addition of chemicals, as well as just standard cleaning. When entering into a service agreement with a pool service company, ensure that the agreement encompasses all the services you think you will require, and be sure to discuss any additional services outside of the agreement, including costs.

Don’t hesitate to check up on the experience, references and history of a pool service company. Any reputable company will be more than happy to provide you with testimonials or references from previously satisfied customers.   Choosing a reputable and recognized pool service company is important to ensure your pool is well-taken care of and that you and your family enjoys a fun and stress-free summer.

Before you open your swimming pool: making necessary repairs

April 26th, 2011

It’s always a good idea to ensure all necessary swimming pool repairs are completed prior to the official opening of your swimming pool. This includes repairing any cracks or other problems with the surrounding patio, checking for leaks and making sure your swimming pool equipment, like filters and pumps, are in good working order. Being proactive about swimming pool repairs before opening your pool can prevent an unwelcome interruption to your family’s summer enjoyment and backyard entertainment.

Having repairs conducted on a public or recreational center swimming pool before it opens for the summer is also especially important: during last summer’s record-breaking heat wave in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), several public swimming pools were closed for weeks at a time while undergoing mid-summer repairs or maintenance – it made the newspapers, and people looking to beat the heat weren’t too happy.

Steps homeowners can take before opening their swimming pool:

  • Make sure that all debris left over from the fall and winter months is removed from the top of the pool and the surrounding area, and that the cover has been allowed to dry before storing it for the summer.
  • Take a moment to inspect your swimming pool chemicals and supplies to make sure there are no leaking containers and that no chemicals or testing materials have expired over the winter.

How a professional swimming pool company can help:

Swimming pool companies can help you inspect your pool liner for rips, tiny tears and any leaks.   Depending on the type of pool you have, tiny cracks may be either completely normal or a serious problem.
Note: some cracks can’t be seen by the naked eye: professional swimming pool companies are specially trained to look for signs of a leak and identify the cause.

Swimming pool companies can also look for wear and tear on your pool equipment, pumps and filters that would otherwise prevent them from running optimally, and make any necessary repairs before the summer starts.
