Check for Swimming Pool Leaks at Pool Opening

Pool opening time is often when customers get the first hints that there may be a leak in their swimming pool or liner. Over the winter here in Scarborough and the Toronto area, the ground freezes and thaws, shifting concrete pools and also the land around your pool. Naturally, if we notice anything requiring repairs during opening procedures, we’ll advise you right and offer a plan to fix it.

Modern swimming pools are more and more efficient in their operations but leaks can mean spoiled landscaping, wasted water and inflated water bills – things nobody wants or needs. It’s important to get a handle on them as soon as you can so a little extra vigilance at the opening of your backyard swimming pool season is a good investment of time.

Clues
Signs that your pool may be leaking include,

• Persistently wet areas of the surrounding lawn – which may not be immediately adjacent to the pool.
• Pool chemistry consistently off even though your measurements are accurate.
• Sunken or eroded areas of the surrounding lawn.
• Does the vinyl liner feel squishy as you walk on it? Leaks can make mud out of the sand base lying underneath the swimming pool liner.

Many environmental factors such as humidity, wind, temperature and of course rainfall can affect the level of a pool, but if you notice a drop of more than two inches or so per week (or about 1/4-inch per day) on a consistent basis, then it strongly points to the suspicion of a leak.

If you suspect a leak, we suggest that you mark the level of the pool and note the water loss over a 24-hour period. Try it once with the pump on and once with it off. That can help to pinpoint the source, which can be anything from plumbing to fittings to vinyl liners.

The Dye Test
Introducing a few crops of visibly colored water (non-toxic food coloring works fine) as close as you can to the affected area can help to zero in on a leak. A leak will draw the coloring into it and outside the pool. That’s how our diver/pool techs find those elusive leaks.

Our swimming pool technicians also use a couple of efficient devices to locate pool leaks, including,

• The Leaktractor that finds leaks in a vinyl liner;
• The Aquascope that finds plumbing breaks.
